Do you know how AMAZING it was to see them WORKING TOGETHER this way though?

This was like an extension of Hunteri Heroici - Dean giving advice, Cas listening.

Like in HH Cas made his own choice about what he wanted to do in life - before it was being a hunter, here it’s shutting himself and the other angels in Heaven in order to try and rebuild his home. And like in HH Dean makes the choice to support Cas in his choice and help him through it.

Because, like Dean says, he didn’t HAVE to help Cas close Heaven - what was important to Dean was closing Hell, the benefits to Dean of closing Heaven were minimal. The way I see it, he chose to help Cas FOR CAS more than for himself. Something he’s been doing throughout this season - in HH and also when he agreed to help Cas save Samandriel and even when he was trying to break Cas out of his mind control. Dean’s attitude to Cas all season has been care for Cas IN AND OF HIMSELF, not as a tool, not as a weapon, just AS CAS.

It’s character development and relationship development all rolled into one and, oh <3

It stings that ultimately Cas’ choice (which came down to trusting Metatron over Naomi) was WRONG in the end. Because it’s another example of Cas screwing up, isn’t it? Of him letting his family down (all the Sam and Cas parallels there).

But at the same time I was SO HAPPY with how it went down. Because when it came to the point where Dean and Cas disagreed on how to proceed. When Dean chose to believe Naomi and Cas chose to believe Metatron - there was no ultimatum between them, this was NOT a repeat of S06, they were not at odds. Instead they were able to split up and make their choices independent of each other.

Dean sacrificed his mission. And saved his brother as a result.

Cas pushed on with his mission. And sacrificed his family as a result.

Choices and consequences they will both have to deal with. But ones that do NOT affect their personal relationship with each other.

What happened allowed Dean and Cas, and will continue to allow them both, to develop as INDIVIDUALS. It gave them independence from each other. While simultaneously developing, and I’d say even strengthening, their relationship.

I agree with pretty much everything you say here, with one exception: after Naomi came down and told Cas what Metatron was going to do, Cas didn’t actually push on with his mission. He didn’t believe Naomi (nor did he have any reason to, and that is HER fault for lying, manipulating, torturing, and generally fucking with his head), but he didn’t actually do anything to advance Metatron’s plot after that. He didn’t have a chance to. And, if he decided to believe Naomi, the actions he took would have been exactly the same, because the first thing he did when he got to Heaven was to go to her office. At that point, things could have gone either way, Cas could have sided with either Metatron or Naomi.

The way the timeline played out:

Naomi tortures the information out of Metatron

Naomi leaves Metatron alone in her office, with her drill (this is presumably when he manages to escape her Dentist Chair of Doom)

Naomi goes to Earth and tells Castiel and Dean about Metatron’s plot

Naomi returns to Heaven (at some point between now and when Cas gets there, she is killed)

Cas takes Dean back to Sam

Cas returns to Heaven, to Naomi’s office

Cas is captured by Metatron

Metatron takes his Grace, the last ingredient

Because say Cas decided to believe Naomi. What would he have done differently? He still had to take Dean to Sam right away to stop him from completing the trials. Naomi would want to get back to Heaven as quickly as she could, what with a super dangerous prisoner there and all. So Cas would have met back up with her in her office after dropping off Dean, which is exactly what he did. If he was going to stop Metatron, he’d have to go to Heaven to do it.

The only question I have is what happened to Cupid’s bow after Cas took it (I don’t think that was made clear in the episode, unless I missed it, there was a lot of stuff happening). Did it go to some unseen dimension where Metatron was able to grab it? Was it still in Cas when Metatron took his Grace, thus giving Metatron two ingredients at once? If it was still in him, could Cas have gotten rid of it before he went up to Heaven? That is about the only thing I think he could have done differently, IF the bow was still in him, because then Metatron would not have had the ingredients needed (at least not immediately). But that’s a pretty big IF, because Metatron wasn’t shown taking the bow from Cas’s palm like he did the cherub. So I don’t think Cas still had it.

I mean, Cas didn’t trust Naomi’s word, but he had no reason to, she made herself untrustworthy, the enemy, she had just try to kill Cas that morning. That’s on her. You can’t blame Cas for not immediately trusting the person who cut up his angel brain, tortured him, manipulated him, lies continuously, forced him to kill an innocent angel for no reason, and forced him to beat his best friend nearly to death. That’s on Naomi.

Not that trusting Metatron was the wisest idea either, but at least Metatron was a blank slate, and Cas was in an emotionally vulnerable and desperate state when Metatron found him (recently tortured, exhausted, still physically injured, still suicidal, suffering from a lack of Dean, full of guilt and self-loathing). So, yeah, it’s not a huge surprise he got suckered by the ultimate wordsmith.

And even with Cas’s obvious reluctance over the Nephillim, that wasn’t enough to cause enough doubt about Metatron’s word. Because although Cas very obviously thought it was wrong and that Nephillim aren’t abominations that need to be slaughtered, he knows that that may very well be what GOD thinks (they are forbidden), and so it might be believable that God would write the killing of one into the Closing Heaven Trials. It’s not like God hasn’t demanded killing before.

Kevin might have been able to convince Cas that Metatron was full of bullshit, the problem is there wasn’t time. There was only a few minutes between the time Kevin told them he couldn’t find anything about Cupid’s Bow or the heart to when Cas was nabbed by Metatron (and most of that time was spent either listening to Naomi or traveling from the bar to the church to Heaven). And Cas didn’t do anything to further Metatron’s plan in those few minutes.

So should Cas have believed Metatron? No. But up until the last five minutes, he shouldn’t have believed Naomi either, because she kept trying to kill/torture him and Dean, so you can’t really blame him for not believing her when she tried to tell him Metatron was full of shit.

It was just a fucking shitty clusterfuck of a situation all around (which is pretty much true of most any plot arc on Supernatural).

in the scene where naomi confronts cas and dean, you can see cas carrying a bag of something bloody (presumably the cupid’s hand?)

I don’t think after that we actually see the bag again, but his left hand is always off-screen, so presumably he still has it when he goes to naomi’s office (which is maybe the one thing he would have/could have done differently had he believed naomi)

If it was something bloody, it was probably the Nephillim heart (I don’t think they cut off the cupid’s hand, I think she just passed it over to Cas in some angel way).

Please excuse me for a second while I laugh about Cas casually just stuffing the heart into a plastic bag and walking around with it, cause I find that shit funny as Hell. Especially if it’s the same bag he bought Dean’s beer and porn in.

So, yeah, he might have had the other two ingredients with him when he went up to Heaven, but the more I think about it, the less I think leaving them behind would have been a viable option.

He’s not going to leave it with Dean and Sam, because it would put them in danger by making them a target for either Naomi or Metatron. And if Naomi was lying, she’d kill Dean and Sam AND destroy the only things that can close Heaven’s Gate (only one Nephillim, after all). Same goes for the bunker and Kevin. He doesn’t have time to find a safe hiding spot for it, and it’s not like he can just leave it anywhere, just shove it under a park bench somewhere. He’s not going to destroy them, because if Metatron is telling the truth, then Cas would have destroyed the only way to close Heaven’s gate (only one Nephillim, after all). The safest place was to keep it with him, go up to Heaven and assess the situation.

But if you mean bring some good qualities back to Bill, like kindness, empathy, altruism, self-sacrifice, charity, love, yeah, not only did he never had any of those qualities (he was a dick while human, and simply became a dick with stronger powers after death), but it’s not Sookie’s job to bring those out in Bill. She’s not there to be his Manic Faery Dream Girl. She’s not there to redeem Bill, to be his salvation, his miracle.

No, really, Bill was a dick when he was human. Do you remember the flashback to the battle he was in? He wanted to shoot the injured boy because his moans MIGHT attract enemy attention, whereas his friend refused to leave a comrade behind. Not to mention he was a slave-owner (and wouldn’t own up to it either, tried to deflect it and put it on his father, and that they only owned two, bullshit does a house that big have only two slaves), and he couldn’t even remember the female house slave’s name, despite the fact that she probably helped raise him (or, as I suspect, she’s Lala’s and Tara’s common ancestor Mae, whose owner made attempts at raping her, and Bill couldn’t risk his prey finding out).

And even if Bill wasn’t a dick when he was human, he’s spent his entire vampire existence being a dick. A sadistic raping dick who abducted people for a living and sold them into slavery (that’s what procuring is).

Bill Compton is not a hero who needs saving from himself.

Bill Compton is not an antihero.

Bill Compton is not a morally grey neutral.

Yeah, I mean, we don’t know with absolute certainty that Bill or the Compton family owned Mae and Winnie, but it is certainly the best fit.

Don’t forget, Tara’s full name is Tara Mae, and her mother’s is Lettie Mae. Mae is a family name, and Bill wouldn’t want to risk letting it be known that he used to own (and made overtures of rape) towards Mae, by letting her name slip (he doesn’t know what Tara knows about her ancestors). Cause, I mean, that would put a hell of a crimp in his seduction plans for Miss Stackhouse.

The Compton family was fairly well-off, they would have had several slaves. Although it is canon that nobody seems to know where the money came from. If it were farming, the Comptons would have had a hell of a lot more slaves than two, not to mention the graveyard between his house and Sookie’s is really old (it was there when Bill was still human), so that parcel of land is out for farming. I suppose all the woods could just be really overgrown abandoned farmland that’s been unused for decades, but there’s not even any old barns or anything. The Comptons could have been merchants or lawyers or something. It just aggravates me that it’s never been addressed in the show.

Sookie’s house (which Bill remembers being built) has some rusted out farm equipment in a corner of the yard, and Sookie has a memory of her grandpa in an orchard, so there may have been a small farm there at one point (but again, no barns). I mean, Sookie and Gran are poor, if Gran had based her income on the small orchard, then once Grandpa Earl disappeared, she might have asked her brother Bartlett to help out. Of course, then she had to chase him off, because he molested Sookie, and has a hard time trying to keep up with maintaining a farm by herself. and then on top of the psychological scars and self-loathing that comes with childhood sexual abuse (on top of the fact that they handled it by Never Speaking Of It) Sookie has the added guilt of We’re Poor Because Of Me, she never moves out, works like mule trying to support the two of them, doesn’t take anything for herself (I mean, she still has her childhood furniture in her room).

Cupid’s bow? Well, that is a bit obvious don’t you think? It is the creation of love. It makes love and spreads love.

I think you know where I am going with this. Cas’ grace, being Cas’ essence and whatnot, is in love and could very much be just love itself; Samandriel did say that he thought Cas had too much “heart”.

Love is what made the angels fall.

Casually pointing out that Metatron said that Cas was the only one that could complete the trials.

Hmmmm.

#I didn’t understand at first #why the last scene hurt so much #and it took seeing the other two #to realize #Cas his watching his entire family burn#not just falling from grace #but being foreced from heaven #and you can see how he blames himself #he thinks he did this #and he did #because he couldn’t let it go #not like sam let it go #he held it in #and it backfired on him #but this hurts so much #because #he’s alone #he’s alone watching them burn #Dean and Sam had each other #Cas doesn’t even have that #all he has is an empty place where his grace should be #and a deep anguish (via fallingfromthursday)
