[Exit, Pursued By A Sloth]

So… is it bad that I’m most excited to see how hot Alex will look in season 5 since te budget seems to grow exponentially every year?

I’m going to have to say that I just don’t buy this “insidious narrative” thing where Sookie is concerned, and maybe even in general. It’s like the Berlin stadium that Hitler built that now people feel weird about playing concerts in, or certain taboo words that we give loads of power to by not saying them: it’s true if we give a shit. Personally, I think Sookie’s wardrobe was less girlie and frill, but no less cheap and cheerful. One episode of high heels at Merlotte’s when she’s not even planning on working does not an insidious trend make.

Believe me, nothing makes me madder than the ways in which women’s genuine voices are repressed. There are loads of reasons I get my feminist dander up, and there’s no doubt that they are a multitude of reasons enshrined in the media, but I just cannot see this in Sookie. She looked a bit more mature sometimes in season 4, I thought, but is it wrong that she should grow up? I think that’s an important narrative thread for her, actually, and one of the ways that can that be shown is by changing aspects of her self-expression. I don’t think that merely freezing a character in her fashion backwards footsteps is enough to honor a female character’s voice or how she expresses herself.

All that said, I feel you on the yellow sundress. That did hearken me back to the great graveyard dirt-rape of season 1. UGH. Super UGH. I was glad when Eric took it off her.

But see, the bolded is part of the problem. There was nothing childish about Sookie’s wardrobe, she wasn’t wearing Garanimals, but because her wardrobe was ‘girlie’ and soft, its considered juvenile. It’s infantilizing that which is considered feminine. And that’s a problem. She doesn’t wear ruffles, and all of a sudden she looks so much more mature. I don’t buy it.

As far as fashion-backwards, is there something wrong with being ‘fashion-backwards’ or not caring about current trends? Is it a requirement that she be fashion-forwards?

And I’m not suggesting freezing her sense of style, or that she can’t change tastes, I’m saying there’s a problem with the suddenness of it, especially when paralleled with her being stolen away to Faery to come back to a land where Bill is in power and the Rattrays didn’t happen.
